What Can Cause Sexually Transmitted Diseases and How to Minimize Risks

In the United States, sexually transmitted infections or STIs are among the most common type of infection after a cold and the flu. More than 20 million people are diagnosed with STD’s every year. Some of them can be cured, while for other diseases, only the symptoms can be managed. What kind of treatment is required depends on the type and severity of the disease.

Common causes

Three major vectors carry sexually transmitted diseases:

  • Viruses as in cases of HPV, hepatitis, Zika, Herpes, HIV/ AIDS
  • Bacteria as in cases of syphilis, Chlamydia or gonorrhea
  • Parasites or insects like scabies mites

If you notice symptoms around the genital organs or anal region, find a testing center near you as soon as possible and consult a specialist. Although many clinics offer treatment for STD, you will get better results with specialist testing centers like Same-Day STD Testing. Since they have thousands of centers around the country, you will likely find them in your zip code.

STDs caused by bacteria are treated through a course of antibiotics. It is necessary to take the drugs until the time prescribed, even if symptoms are no longer visible. Viral STDs cannot be cured as of today, but their symptoms can be managed safely to a large extent.

How they are transmitted

Usually, the germs that cause STDs are present in semen, vaginal fluids, and also saliva. The most common mechanisms for the spread of sexually transmitted diseases include:

  • Sexual intercourse
  • Oral sex
  • Anal sex
  • Other sexual activities

With sexual activity, STDs can be transmitted even if there is no ejaculation. Some viral infections like HIV and hepatitis are also caused by sharing drug injecting needles with others. Many are also caused by common body piercing, tattooing equipment, and personal items like a razor or toothbrush.

Avoiding sexually transmitted diseases

Given the myriad ways that STDs can spread among people, it might seem impossible to avoid getting them at some stage. The safest way, of course, is to have no sex at all. However, you can minimize the risks of getting infected if you take care of a few things:

  • Do not share personal care items with others as they are very easy transmitters of STD causing bacteria and viruses
  • Always use condoms during sexual intercourse. Avoiding alcohol and drugs before sex will help you remember to do so
  • If you are about to start a relationship with a new partner, it is prudent for both to undergo tests at a good testing center
  • Limit the number of sexual partners you have, so there are fewer chances of contracting an infection

If you are pregnant and you or your partner have a history of STD, you must get yourself tested frequently. It will help avoid passing on the infection to the fetus and prevent complications later. STDs are eminently avoidable if you are aware of the risks and take adequate precautions.
